This post is your guide to course registration at Yonsei. Before the actual registration period, make sure you do these two things: 1. Look at the course equivalency sheet
2. Look at the Yonsei course catalog
Registration Period: Registration is very different than at UHM. Rather than having a specific period based on the amount of credits you have and registering for courses, Yonsei's registration is based off a milage/bidding system. Basically, during a period of about 2-3 days, you have an allotted number of milage points. You then bid your milage points on the classes that you want to take, and the day after the registration period is over, you are able to see whether or not you got into the class you bid on. My Experience: Personally, my course registration wasn't too bad. The only stressful part for me was during the Add/Drop Period which I will talk about later in this post. Before the course registration period, I met with Rikki to discuss the courses I needed to take at Yonsei. She was very helpful in letting me know what classes to take at Yonsei and what classes I would be taking in the Spring semester. I had a clear idea of what courses to take, with most of them being pre-approved to transfer back to UHM. There were two classes that I found on the catalog that were not already approved so I decided to petition it. The first class was: IEE3325: Business and Society, which I thought would be able to transfer over as a BUS367I course. The second class was BIZ4183: Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility: A Psychological Approach, which I thought would transfer as a HRM elective. Once I figured these out, I submitted a petition and waited to hear back. I waited until the last minute (literally about a week before the registration period) to submit my petitions, but fortunately I was able to hear back about two days before registration. I found out that my IEE3325 petition was approved as BUS367I. My other petition, for BIZ4183 was denied as a HRM elective, but approved as a MGT elective. Although it wasn't what I hoped for, the class still works for me as I needed a non-Bus, non-major class. After this, I had four classes I wanted to sign up for: IEE3325 (BUS367I), BIZ4183 (MGT Elective), BIZ3135 (MKT381) and IEE3341 (Korean Language). The registration process was super simple. All you have to do is create a wish list of all the classes you want, and then when registration opens, you put the amount of milage you want to bid for each class. Everyone (or at least all undergraduates, I think) get 72 milage points; however, classes may differ on maximum/minimum bid. For example, the max milage for IEE3325 was 36 while BIZ3135's was 24. Keeping that in mind and looking at previous semesters' bids, I put in milage points and waited until results came out. Results came out a day later, and luckily, I was able to receive all of my classes that I wanted! If you are not able to get the courses you want, don't worry, there is an add/drop period when school starts, which I will talk about in a next post. Tips: 1. Look at previous semester bids to get an idea of how much to bid I found this to be one of the most helpful things I did during this process. I highly recommend you to do this, especially since UHM does not use a bidding system. First Picture: A screenshot of the general course catalog. On the left hand, you can see the semester - 20182 is 2018 Fall Semester. To the right, there are colored boxes (pink, blue, purple). If you click on the orange box, it will take you to the second picture.
Second Picture: The second picture is the milage result from that specific semester. At the top, there is general information about the course (instructor, time, etc). On the top left, you can see the max milage (max amount possible to bid), and average. Looking at that, you can get a better idea on how much people have bid in the past. At the bottom, there is a list of milage result ranking. It shows the results of every person who bid on the course. From the top person who bid the max to the person who bid 5 and may not have gotten in this class (cut off in picture). *Keep in mind that by doing this, you are working off of previous semesters (can get general idea of popularity of class) but it may be different with your current semester.* 2. Start and prepare early! Go to your advisor to see what classes you need to be taking in order to graduate, and check Yonsei's course catalog to see if they are offering courses you need. If not, make sure to fill out a course petition ASAP, and have a back up plan just in case that doesn't work. Before registration, make sure you understand the registration process - read the handbook thoroughly, ask friends who studied there before, so that you're not scrambling at the end! 3. Don't stress! Course registration can be super stressful, especially if you're not familiar with the registration process. If you're not able to get your classes during the registration period, you still have the add/drop period to get them.
